Stress Management - Symptom Checklist

Below are symptoms people experience when exposed to stress.


If you have experienced a symptom in the past two weeks, rate the severity of discomfort from that symptom by entering a number next to that particular symptom using a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being slight discomfort, 3 being moderate, and 5 being extreme discomfort. Under each symptom, write down your top 3 symptoms.



Physical Symptoms

Some of the physical symptoms include headaches, indigestion, stomach aches, sweaty palms, cold hands & feet, dizziness, easily fatigued, muscle tension, back pain, tight neck & shoulders, racing heart, shallow breathing, restlessness, rising in the ears, constipation and diarrhea.


Behavioral Symptoms

Some of the behavioral symptoms include excess smoking, bossiness, eating too little or tii much, critical attitude of others, short-tempered, procrastination, sleeping too much or too little, driving too fast, grinding of teeth, overuse of alcohol, inability to finish tasks, nail biting and being fidgety.


Emotional Symptoms

Some of the emotional symptoms include bothered by unimportant things, nervousness, anxiety, boredom, edginess, irritable, feeling burned out, feeling of powerless, crying easily, overwhelming pressure, anger, loneliness, unhappiness, depression and feeling helpless.


Cognitive Symptoms

Some the cognitive symptoms include trouble thinking clearly, difficulty with concentration or focus, forgetfulness, lack of creativity, expecting too much from others, inability to make decisions, constant worry, loss of humor, being self critical and being pessimistic.

1. What are your stress triggers? What situations occur, on a regular basis, which cause you to feel stressed?

2. With which people are you likely to find yourself feeling stressed or tense?

3. How do you currently deal with stress?

4. What physical clues let you know you are feeling stressed?

5. Do you experience any behavioral changes when you are feeling stressed? If so, identify those here.

6. What do you feel emotionally in response to stress?

7. Complete the Stress Symptom Checklist. Which symptoms of stress are you most likely to notice first?
